Nashville-based singer-songwriter Diane King is no stranger to that music city in Tennessee nor to the music industry, having performed in multiple groups and even worked for a time on the business side of things for other artists. King is back front-and-center now, right where she should be. Rife with three-part harmonies, her Americana-rock-folk music is pure perfection, her gorgeous vocals accompanied by the twang and grit of the music behind it. Her brand new single, “Dangerous” – the first single from her album “SKY” –  is a perfect example of why King is an artist to watch, and we couldn’t love this song more. We sat down with King recently to explore everything about “Dangerous.”

Hi, Diane. Welcome to VENTS! You have an amazing new single out in June called “Dangerous.” What inspired you to write the song, and what is it about?

After a hard day at work, my new love was ready to “sell it all and move to the beach.” Because it was a new relationship and I was learning who this person was, I was just listening closely and then I thought, “I would so do that!” The next thought that came to my mind was, “Uh oh, together we’re going to be dangerous!” I knew right then it was a song! Songs typically come to me first with a title.

The song has a really cool vibe. Did you have a particular sound in mind before you recorded this one? How is it similar to or different from what you imagined before you went into the studio?

Yes! I wanted it to be a driving, attitude, gritty, rocker song. When the idea for the song came to me, I had recently met another singer-songwriter, Anne E. DeChant. She had an edge to her writing and music, so I asked her if she’d like to co-write the song with me. I so rarely co-write. We met up one day to write, sat outside on a patio, and started hammering out “Dangerous.” In the studio, I actually did some beatboxing so our drummer Jack Bruno, would know exactly what I was hearing. We also brought in Steve Mackey on bass, ’cause he fit the energy of “Dangerous” perfectly. Bob Britt played the electric guitar and that KILLER solo in the break! It turned out EXACTLY how I heard it in my mind!

Speaking of the studio, what were the recording sessions like? What was your favorite part about recording this song?

Recording is so much fun. It’s draining and hard work, but it’s just amazing to be in that creative zone and hear your songs come to life. My favorite part of recording this song would be the feedback I got from all the musicians. I respect them so much, and they genuinely loved the song! Those kinds of compliments aren’t given out lightly. They also validated for me that it was a total rocker! They all brought their best to the song, taking it to another level… where it deserves to be!

What kind of feedback have you gotten from fans about this song if you’ve been playing it live? What do you hope the the song inspires in listeners who hear it?

I can’t even tell you how many times people have walked up to me and started singing “Dangerous.” I love it! This song is kind of an anthem for living life and having adventures and loving every minute!

This song is from an album called “SKY” that is coming out later this year. How does this song fit in among the others on the album?

“SKY” is about limitless love. “Dangerous” is one variation of love, as are all the songs on “SKY.” Life and love can come easy and be amazing, and it can be, and will be, incredibly hard and difficult. You’re going to experience life and love in all kinds of ways. It all ties to the metaphor of the sky – beautiful and awesome at times, dark and stormy and scary at times. But behind that darkened view, there’s still beautiful, blue “SKY”!
